Google+: The Pros and Cons of Using it for Your Business

In November 2011, Google unveiled their new social media venue, Google +. While it’s been clear from the beginning that Google + would be beneficial to large businesses and corporations, many have questioned whether or not it’s important for the small business owner. Similar to any social media venue, Google + has its advantages and disadvantages.

If you’re a small-business owner who’s looking to expand your current social media marketing campaign, Google + might be beneficial to you. Likewise, if you’re just getting started with social media marketing, you may also gain exposure by using Google +. To determine how this venue might fit into your marketing plan, read on to learn about the pros and cons of using Google + for your business.

The Advantages

  1. Enjoy a Rise in Search Results. One of the greatest benefits you can enjoy by using Google + as part of your social media marketing plan is a rise in Google searches. As your business name, products and services rise higher in the search ranks, you’ll gain invaluable exposure for your small business.
  2. Connect with Tech-Savvy Consumers. High-tech consumers enjoy using Google + because it’s easy to spread the word about posts and profiles they enjoy. Small businesses with a tech industry focus will attract the appropriate audience of people who are prone to adopt newly introduced products and services in the computer or technical industry. By using Google +, the business owner creates a clear path to consumers who love and embrace new technology.
  3. Target Specific Consumer Groups. On Google +, individuals and businesses connect through circles. As you add to your circles, you can divide followers into appropriate groups, such as “Customers”, “Vendors” and more. Each time you share something, you can select which circles you want to share with to ensure you’re targeting the most appropriate group.
  4. Broaden Your Network. If you’d like to expand your network with other small-business owners, Google + is an effective place to do so. Request to be added to other business owners’ circles and add them to yours. As is the case with any social media venue, always be reciprocal to avoid developing a reputation of selfishness.

The Disadvantages

  1. Administration Challenges. Unfortunately, it’s not possible to add administrators to your Google + account like you can on Facebook and other sites. This means that you either have to manage your account alone or trust someone else to log-in with your username and password. This can be a problem for small-business owners who are busy and need to delegate social media to an employee.
  2. Competition. The competition is stiff when it comes to social media marketing. Although Google+ is doing well, it still has a long way to go to surpass the popularity of Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Yet, it’s still a worthwhile addition to a small-business owner’s marketing campaign.
  3. Issues with Social Media Integration. Many social media venues allow you to post to other venues simultaneously, but most don’t include Google+ in the integration. This simply means that the user can’t take care of two tasks in one step. Hopefully, this issue will change to make the use of multiple social media venues more streamlined.
  4. Google + Circles Limitations. A Google+ account that’s set up as an individual account allows the user to connect with other individuals and businesses. Unfortunately, those who set up their accounts as a business can only add other businesses to their circles.

Making the Decision

It’s not necessary to have a large business the size of Pepsi to benefit from using Google +. The point of using social media marketing to boost your businesses is to attract global customers you wouldn’t be able to reach otherwise. Including Google + in your online marketing campaign can help your business gain more exposure, which will eventually translate into a rise in sales.

To get started, a well-designed business blog page or website is important. As you post new products, services or blog posts you can share them directly from your Google + account. It takes just a few minutes to create a Google + account using basic information. Once the account is open, take the time to fill out the profile completely. Add the company logo for the profile picture and include URLs leading to your business website and blog. After the initial setup, Google + is one of the simplest social media venues to use for building credibility, expertise and a broader consumer base.
