More than 1 billion unique users visit YouTube each month watching over 6 billion hours of video. YouTube is localised in 61 different countries and languages and has shown that in the US, it reaches more adults aged 18-34 than any cable network. It can thus be an important tool for educational advertisers seeking to target younger demographics.

Featuring targeting options such as geography, demographic criteria, and video topic, you can reach potential students as broadly or narrowly as desired.

To get started, simply create a YouTube channel for your institution and upload a video. Then you can start advertising.

One form of video advertising on YouTube is through TrueView video adverts. This is the most popular form of advertising on YouTube as it gives the viewer the choice of whether or not to watch your advert while allowing you to maximize your budget by delivering the right message to the right person at the right time. Your ad is more likely to be viewed by users who are genuinely interested in your institution.

TrueView In-Stream ads play as a pre-, mid-, or post-roll on YouTube partner videos of all lengths. These adverts are skipable after 5 seconds. However, advertisers will only pay when viewers watch the advert for 30 seconds or to completion.

This option gives you a great platform from which to deliver highly targeted video adverts to potential students while only paying when viewers choose to watch. The only real drawback to this form of video advertising is that the adverts are skipable so you could conceivably generate zero views from them. To avoid this, it is important to create adverts that engage potential students immediately and give them a reason not to click the “skip” button.

Another option for video advertising on YouTube comes in the form of Standard In-Stream adverts. These are considered to be more like traditional television adverts. The ads play in the same manner as TrueView In-Stream adverts but they cannot be skipped and are charged on a cost-per-view basis. Ads can be a maximum of 15 seconds attached to a video of 10 minutes or less, or a maximum of 30 seconds with a video that is longer than 10 minutes.
