Instagram for Universities #StudentRecruitment

With over 300 million monthly active users sharing 70 million photographs daily, Instagram is the trend you need to be getting in on. The social media app has now given brands the go-ahead to advertise across the platform, however, whilst we wait for Instagram’s full ad roll out, you can still get started on the platform. We’ve detailed how and why your university should get involved now.

“Urgh, not another social media platform?” “Instagram? #nothanks” “We’re on Facebook and Twitter, surely that’s enough social media presence?!…”

…is what you may be muttering inside your head as you read the title, inviting you to explore yet another digital community to boost your student recruitment.

Well… Actually, it’s true, but this one is definitely worth your attention, we promise.

If you’re not already familiar with Instagram, it is simply a photo-sharing app that enables its users to upload visual content to their accounts, following, liking and commenting on other photographs, engaging with current trends and topics with the ‘#’.

However, it does differ from the other social media sites you’re already comfortably acquainted with, such as Facebook and twitter, in that, unlike its counterparts, it is almost solely a mobile platform, meaning users have a very limited range of activities that can be performed whilst using the desktop version of the site.

With 76% of users 16 – 34 years old, it is more than likely that your demographic is highly active within this community, and as such, more and more universities are turning to this photo-sharing app as a way to showcase their campus and surroundings. The sturdy prospectus was good while it lasted, but today’s students are not interested in waiting ‘3-5 working days’ for information. They want it now.

Student recruitment is, first and foremost, a race and your university needs to get running if you want to place.

Instagram isn’t just built for brief encounters, with users delivering content quickly; this platform gives you the potential to form a lasting impression. By becoming active within this visually-driven community, you can, over-time, create a brand – cultivate and carry forward a leading message – that envelopes every aspect of your university. Through this, you have the opportunity to construct a digital space where all staff and students, past, present and future can interact and engage.

Like all social media, Instagram has further broken down society’s hierarchy, online there is no longer an ‘us vs. them’. Whether it’s an Institution, company or brand, they are all communicating on the same level as the user, all interacting and engaging with one another as equals. And so it comes as no surprise that students now expect to be able to communicate with their universities on a personal level. This is what students want, it’s what they need, and it is now your responsibility to provide it for them.

In addition, it’s not just home students who are engaged; 34% of users are from the Middle East and Africa, with a further 33% coming from Latin America, your university has the potential to reach further abroad, exhibiting your campus, city and student life to entice a multitude of future international students.

Get connected

You’ve conquered Facebook, mastered Twitter, and now you’ve got all this rich content just waiting to be shared even further.

To maximise your social media presence, and user engagement, students expect to see brand continuity. Whether it’s an open day event, a student blog or clearing, content is not exclusive to one social media platform, get connected and get sharing to increase your online visibility. It’s likely that students are already talking about your university; it’s not too late to get involved and lead the conversation.
